As a nation, the United States is becoming more and more sleep deprived. Our busy life styles lead to divided sleep patterns: one for sleep and one for wakefulness. This is not the natural sleep pattern of humans.

Sleep researchers have shown that regardless of how long one sleeps at night, the human body is programmed to become sleepy in the early afternoon. Most mammals are polyphasic sleepers – they sleep for short periods throughout the day.

A 20-30 minute nap is usually recommended for short-term alertness. It can improve mood, alertness, performance, and reduce mistakes and accidents.

Napping enthusiasts have included Albert Einstein, Napoleon Bonaparte, Thomas Edison and at least three presidents: John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.

"Napping should not be frowned upon at the office or make you feel guilty at home," writes Dr. James B. Maas, a psychologist and sleep expert at Cornell. "It should have the status of daily exercise."

By now you’re probably thinking about ways to incorporate naps into your daily routine. Keep in mind that getting enough sleep on regular basis is the best way to stay alert and feel your best, but when fatigue sets in, a quick nap can do wonders for your mental and physical stamina.

Today's world is stressful. Periodic, thoughtful relaxation is no longer a luxury; it's essential. Since the mind and body are connected, you can relax one by relaxing the other. This CD will help whether you have just a few minutes or as much time as you need to rest.

I've designed Essential Relaxation to be used in several ways. If you only have five or ten minutes, use either the progressive relaxation or the savasana (pronounced sha-VA-sa-na). For a longer relaxation, use both. For a true meditation, use the yoga nidra. If you have about an hour to devote to relaxation, use all three. Listening to the entire CD is also a great way to help you fall asleep.
